Fortuna Necklace
Fortuna Necklace
The horseshoe has long been held as a symbol of good luck. While the exact origins of this belief are difficult to trace, there are several possibilities. The ancient Greeks believed that iron held magickal properties which could ward of evil, and that the shape of the horseshoe resembles a crescent, which they considered a symbol of fertility and good luck. In Christian lore, the horseshoe's luck points back to St. Dunstan, the patron saint of blacksmiths, goldsmiths, and jewelers. Legend says that during an encounter with the devil St. Dunstan nailed an iron horseshoe to his cloven hoof causing the devil intense pain. St. Dunstan agreed to remove the horseshoe, but only if the devil promised to never enter a home where a horseshoe was hung above the door.
